The Government of Maharashtra on September 01, 2026, issued a circular regarding the implementation of the guidelines dated August 01, 2025, concerning the immersion of idols in connection with celebrating eco-friendly festivals.
The following has been stated: -
•The circular enforces interim orders from the Bombay High Court regarding eco-friendly festival celebrations and Plaster of Paris (PoP) idol immersion.
•Guidelines issued in the August 01, 2025 Government Resolution will remain effective until the High Court delivers its final verdict.
•All local self-government bodies are strictly instructed to comply with these environmental guidelines.
•Local authorities must arrange adequate artificial ponds for the immersion of idols up to 6 feet in height.
•Public groups (mandals) are encouraged to install smaller idols or re-use large idols to promote environmental protection.
